Prescribed Medications

Here are the medications most often prescribed for chronic pain patients. Click on the names for details about each drug's contents, uses, cautions, side effects and interactions.
Acetaminophen
Acetaminophen (brand name Tylenol) is a fever- and pain-reducing medication that is widely used to relieve simple headaches and muscle aches.

Baclofen
Baclofen relieves muscle spasms, cramping, and tightness of muscles caused by medical problems such as multiple sclerosis or certain injuries to the spine.

Codeine
Codeine is an opioid with a relatively limited analgesic effect. It has a cough suppressing effect.

Fentanyl
Fentanyl is strong medicine for serious pain. It is used in injection form in hospitals, via the intracathedral pump, and via the Duragesic patches.

Hydrocodone
The drug is an opiate prescribed for the relief of moderate to moderately severe pain, mainly for back pain and migraine headaches. Recently, hydrocodone has come under fire for being a heavily abused prescription drug.

Kadian
Kadian, also known as MS Contin, is a controlled-release morphine tablet containing morphine, used to relieve moderate to severe pain.

Marinol
Marinol Capsules are often used for HIV and cancer patients as an appetite stimulant and should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor, and indicated on the prescription label.

Methadone
Methadone is suitable for the treatment of severe pain. Can be used alone or in low doses as a breakthrough medication.

Morphine
Morphine is the principal medical alkaloid of opium. Its effects are pain relief, euphoria, dependence potential, and respiratory depression.

Oxycodone
Oxycodone is a narcotic analgesics (pain reliever) used to treat moderate-to-severe pain.

Oxycontin
Oxycontin is the time-release form of oxycodone. It is often titrated to find the correct dosage.

Percocet
Percocet is also known as Endocet, Roxicet, Tylox. It contains two drugs--acetaminophen and oxycodone.

Robaxin
Robaxin contains one active ingredient - a central acting muscle relaxant that works to reduce muscle spasm and tension in the muscles.

Soma
Soma (generic name carisoprodol) is a narcotic muscle relaxer more cautiously prescribed than other muscle relaxers, especially if a patient is taking narcotic pain medication.

Vicodin
Vicodin combines a narcotic analgesic and cough reliever with a non-narcotic analgesic for the relief of moderate to moderately severe pain.

Zanaflex
Zanaflex (generic name Tizanidine) is a stronger muscle relaxer with more of a tendency to cause drowsiness.
